Hilton Head Health offers a one- to six-week coeducational Healthy Lifestyle™ program based upon three fundamentals: fitness, nutrition, and SELF (stress management, empowerment, longevity, and fulfillment). The program fees include accommodations in either a private or semiprivate villa, all meals and snacks, health screening, unlimited access to daily fitness classes, nutritional classes and cooking demonstrations, and group lifestyle sessions. Day passes are available on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Guests can complement their stay with massages at the 2,000-square-foot spa, including reflexology, hot stone, and therapeutic/deep tissue. In-villa massages are also offered.

I stayed at the Hilton Head Health Institute late in 2011. Based on their website I had high hopes of kick starting an exercise and weight loss program. I was so disappointed. First, the cottage I was assigned to was filthy. The bedroom walls were so covered in dust that I thought it was fuzzy wallpaper. The carpeting was black in areas with dirt. Gross! After the first day of weigh in and meeting with staff you are totally on your own. No one will check on you, nothing, unless you pay for counseling appointments ($100 each) or specific training appts. Otherwise you simply pick and choose what you might like to do...and if you do nothing I guess that's okay too. I am not self motivated which is why I paid big bucks to go to an "Institute" where I thought I'd get training and encouragement. Nope...I felt completely invisible. The food was SO bad that I stopped eating at the Lodge and bought food for my cottage. Some of the meals actually made me sick to my stomach...no salt, flavored with herbs and such...like fennel. Yuck! There were several others who were terribly dissatisfied with their accomodations and with the food too. And as far as "beach" location~ Nope, the beach is at least a mile walk away.

Each villa is owned by a different owner – and we continue to improve the consistency of the quality. Just as we continue to improve our program by introducing new lectures and activities, we are taking steps to improve our accommodations. We also continue to expand and improve on our menu offerings. Several guests find that our gourmet cuisine is one of the highlights of our program – so much so that we offer regular cooking demonstrations, classes and fine dining experiences in our Culinary Arts Center. Losing weight is easy due to the caring and informative staff at H3. Lectures, exercise routines and cooking classes teach you how to eat healthier meals rather always being on a diet. You will also learn how to improve your cardio, strength, flexibility and reduce stress while eating gourmet meals and staying in a caring and luxury facility. It doesn't get better than this!

OK, full disclosure here. I do some marketing work for Hilton Head Health and they invited me to participate in their program so that I could experience what a guest goes through during their stay. H3 is a weight loss / wellness resort, and the majority of people who come here would like to lose at least a little. That said, this program WILL help you lose weight, but it is SO much more than that I hardly know where to begin. I was treated just like any other guest - shared accommodations, group meals and group fitness and lecture sessions - but it is such a personal experience for each individual, you never feel as though you're just part of a large group. I thought I knew alot about health, healthy cooking and eating and fitness, and I learned something new every single day of my stay! The staff is top-notch - lectures and teachings are grounded in basic science, but include up-to-the-minute research in all of their presentations and handouts. The program is based on the basics - eat according to the Food Pyramid and eat sensible portions; if you want to lose weight, you need to burn off more calories than you take in; exercise should be based on a combination of cardio and strength. The classes are varied and fun; no matter what your fitness level is, you'll find classes to try (and enjoy!). The thing that sets this program apart is the supportive, caring nature of every single person on staff. From the minute you check in, you meet a succession of helpful, interested, caring professionals who want nothing more than to see you succeed with the program, both while you're on-site and after you return home. If you are looking for a healthy vacation, a getaway with girlfriends, a couples retreat, a place to relax and rejuvenate, or you simply want to lose weight and feel better, you couldn't ask for a better place to start. H3 is not a pampering spa atmosphere, but you'll feel well cared for and safe throughout your stay. Best business trip I've ever taken!
