Nice but Odd Waiting area
By DianeC | May 23, 2013
4.00 out of 5 stars
I don't know if they have changed the waiting area since I was there last, but when we were there we had to wait to be called in for our treatments in chair placed around a highly chlorinated pool. A friend of ours is allergic to chlorine and had to wait in the large living room/cafe room area. However the chlorine still bothered her so badly that she had to cancel her massage and went for a facial instead, which took place out in the salon instead of in a treatment room. I found that odd too, since any facial I've ever had in a resort spa was in a low lit quiet treatment room, not in a bright busy salon. Another woman in my party and I did a complimentary meditation class in the morning before the spa treatments. This took place in a large quiet comfortable room, but also just off the pool. While the location of the pool in relation to the services and the relaxation area was perfect, the overwhelming amount of chlorine in the pool was way to pungent and that put a damper on our experience. As I said, I'm hoping they changed this a bit since my last visit as I would like to give this spa another try. Massage was very good, place very clean and service very good.

Seasonal Apricot Facial
By NancyB | March 16, 2013

Friday was my fourth visit to the Spa and I booked the seasonal Apricot/Peach facial. I have had many facials but nothing compared to this treatment...apricots and peaches from France, I was reminded! My face looked wonderful and even three days later feels as soft as it did when I left the spa! But before I left I booked another before this offering disappears for the spring!

A girlfriend and I went for an overnight for my birthday. We each enjoyed a spa treatment (massage was superb!), a meditation class, use of the facility, lunch and dinner. It was so relaxing walking around in our robes - even to the restaurant! A day well spent.

Great time, but really busy!

I just returned from a weekend at the Spa at Norwich Inn. I have visited in the past and enjoyed it very much. I stayed off grounds, but enjoyed a day pass on both Saturday and Sunday. I had the Norwich Signature Massage and the Crystal Peel Cream Microdermabrasion. Both treatments were great. The drawback about the weekend was that it was incredibly loud. Despite the numerous signs reminding visitors to maintain the spa experience through quiet conversation, it was disregarded and the staff did nothing to enforce the reminders. It was also extremely busy. This led to a lack of seating, especially in the silent room where there are eight chaise lounges. People were waiting in line to go into the room and many of those who were in the room were sleeping. The afternoon tea was quite nice and the facilities were clean. I would return, but probably during the work week when it is probably less busy.

first time at a day spa, and it was fantastic!!

I went about two years ago with some of the women in my family as a mother's day treat to ourselves, and we all enjoyed it so much that we're planning another mother's day trip to The Spa at Norwich Inn again this year! 2 years ago was the first time I had ever been to a day spa, and it also happened to be while I was pregnant so I wasn't sure what to expect. Fortunately I was pleasantly surprise. The massage therapist was very professional and yet still personable at the same time. The only thing I wish I could have changed was speaking up about wanting her to push into my back a little deeper as the pregnancy really had me aching. Also 50mins is just not enough!! The fitness class we picked was yoga. Our instructor was funny, helpful, and encouraging. During our downtime my mom and aunts annoyed the jacuzzi, and sauna, while I enjoyed the heated pool and the "quite room" for reading. Lunch was also delicious, and because we booked a spa package our lunch was included in the price. We were able to order one appetizer, soup or salad, and then one meal. I got the chilli and a burger, which was absolutely scrumptious! Now that I'm typing this all out, I really cannot wait to book another spa package again for this year!!

I visited this spa AGAIN 2 weeks ago with some girlfriends (group of 15) and we had an absolute BLAST! To some in the group it was their first time (10th time for me) and they were amazed as to how incredible this spa was. We each had the Rejuvination Package, which I have to say is well worth the cost..... you get overnight accomodations, dinner in Kensingtons, Breakfast, 2 spa treatments and a fitness class. Can't wait to go their again..... thinking about booking again in March/April. HAPPY SPA'ING!!!

Most relaxing, pampering and renewing

From the tranquil, country setting to the lovely historic inn, this was a wonderful stay. I spent two nights in December. I stayed in one of the inn rooms, which is located within the same building as all spa areas and treatments. The yoga classes were so helpful, I can't say enough about the very competent instructors. The spa facilities are perfect and include everything, from robes to lotion! Everything is absolutely spotless! My facial was so relaxing and made me look 10 years younger! I was a bit dissatisfied with my manicure, seemed rushed and a tiny bit sloppy. All in all, I cannot wait to return!!

Great experience

My mother and I spent two nights at the spa. I had a facial and a massage and enjoyed both treatments. My mother loved her foot massage. She had booked a Swedish massage and requested a female masseuse, however, she was given a male masseuse. As a result, she had to cancel. When she spoke with the person who booked the treatment for her, the reason given was "I forgot". I found this to be unusual as I had watched this person type my mother's request into the computer. The lesson learned was to double check when making specific requests. We had a delicious dinner and breakfast, although both were expensive. The afternoon tea was delightful. The one drawback was that the public space in the spa was rather loud. It would be much more relaxing if they monitored the noise level. The facilities were clean and we felt very comfortable there. The room that we had booked was actually an apartment, which was at the far end of the property. This was not problematic in the least as the Inn offers a free shuttle service from the room to the main inn/spa. They responded within minutes of our request for transport. I would definitely recommend this spa.

I enjoyed a great day at the Spa at Norwich. My treatments (a facial and pedicure) were relaxing and well done. The staff was very friendly and answered all my questions. This was my first time being at a true day spa so I was a little overwhelmed at first by the number of other women there, but once I got used to where everything was located, that didn't bother me. There was plenty of room for all to relax between treatments. One piece of feedback I would give to the staff is to be sure their clients know when they check in what time their treatments are (I had been told over the phone, but couldn't remember exactly) and reminders/tips for other activities such as lunch and tea time. I was given a tour of the facilities when I arrived, but didn't know what to do next (do I have time to relax now?, can I go to lunch in my robe?), and actually felt a little stressed. However, the lady who checked me in heard my questions and provided me with my schedule, and then I felt relaxed. Overall a great day!

My mom and sister and I go for an overnight stay each summer to get some time together. We love it there! They have a nice package called "Country Getaway" which includes a hotel room, dinner and breakfast at Kensington's. The food is terrific and so is the spa. As for someone mentioning the "mold" on the shower walls, I noticed that too last time we were there. Upon close inspection, I do think it is part of the tiles and not mold at all. Also, the room inside the hotel are smaller, but in the main building. The cottage rooms are bigger, but can be quite a bit of a walk depending on which building you are in. You have to give this place a try- it is truly relaxing!

Myself and two other college roommates met here this weekend because it was part way between us all. We had massages and various other treatments. We will definitely be back next year.

Girlfriends Weekend Trip - Spa 10 Hotel Stay 1
By SharonB | July 11, 2011

3 of us just came back from a stay at the Spa at Norwich. Our room was 1/4 away from the main inn. The room was nice but not extraordinary. Without a car, it was difficult to walk up and down the hills to get to the inn. To make matters worse, the phone in our room didn't work. The food and service at the restaurant was inconsistent. Dinner at Ascots was great the first night and breakfast the first morning was great as was the service. However, things went downhill from there. The next day at lunch we waited for our server for over 15 minutes- she only came over when we complained to the maitre d'. Dinner at night was dismal (polenta was like cardboard, tenderloin undercooked, zucchini as was breakfast on Sunday - overcooked eggs Benedict and omelet and cold pancakes, the fruit was hot. However, our day of spa treatments was fabulous. The folks at the spa could not have been better. We were treated like royalty there. James, Leslie, Paula, Djardin were fabulous. We're planning for a weekend in November. However, unfortuately it won't be here.

I loved this spa for its service. The food in the resturants is expensive but worth the money. My only complaint would be for the "quiet room" The chairs could be more comfortable. They might think about having an attendant monitoring the room to ensure that there are enough blankets and magazines. Other than that I like the spa enviornment and the treatments are great.

Went to the Spa on a very busy Sunday. The hot stone massage was great. The wrap was just okay. All of the spa rooms were VERY cold which made it hard to enjoy the treatments unless you were completely covered. The treatment room shower was not very clean and you could see mildew on the walls which showed it hadn't been thoroughly cleaned in a while. Being a high end spa this was disappointing. The staff was friendly and the spa lunch was delicious.

Wonderful Mother / Daughter getaway

In Sept 2010 my daughter and I had a great getaway at the Spa. We arrived on a Sunday afternoon so it was not too crowded and stayed overnight. We enjoyed the bellydancing class, massages, wraps and other services. The only service I was not happy with was my facial - the girl did not stop talking the entire time and it was not relaxing. But the rest of the facility was wonderful and we had a great time. The food was "O.K" but we are fussy since my daughter is a chef. I would go back again because it was relaxing and enjoyable.

Watch Out For BIG Parties
By DeborahM | November 19, 2010
4.00 out of 5 stars
This Spa was overbooked on the weekend and this definitely detracted from the relaxation factor. There were several large parties of ten or more women, not very well behaved, and very loud, who dominated the spa facility. The only "quiet" room has about 12 lounge chairs and is freezing cold. So there was no escaping the loud parties pre-and-post treatment. In addition, the cafe in the Spa was poorly managed and easily overwhelmed. I would have been willing to spend more money, for a more relaxing (read: not overcrowded) experience. Especially at tea time.

To start, the spa was way too crowded. At times, you could not fit in the hot tub and there were not enought seats for everyone to sit down. Also, the room that we stayed in was musty and moldy and 1 of the rooms had HUGE ants in it and when we asked for a new room, we were met with a great deal of resistance. Lastly, the spa in in dire need up updating. This spa is not at all what I had expected.

I measure other spas to this one and there is just NO COMPARISON- its not just a spa, it's an experience! The suites are beautiful and a nice man will come in and light the fireplace if desired!! I can't imagine a nicer spa. The only strange thing is that there are weddings there, and you may be walking around in a robe in the front room with a bunch of wedding guests and a bride and groom! It is so much fun to enjoy a nice glass of wine in the pub with your robe on!! Sigh...

I went here for a friend's bachelorette. The place itself is AMAZING. We did a Yoga class & massages while we were there. All of the other girls enjoyed their massages, but I had some new-age type of massage done to me that was not relaxing at all and not what I had asked for. I should have complained at the time, but I didn't. It wouldn't stop me from going back here, but I'd make sure I got what I wanted before leaving. I definitely recommend this place for a relaxing day or over night get-away.

My friends and I, who call ourselves the Spa Girls, go to a spa every year to reconnect, relax, and get away from our everyday responsibilities and husbands. We have been to Norwich a number of times because they have some of the best packages out there. We are going again next month for the country retreat package, which includes breakfast, dinner afternoon tea and scones, and accomodations. the food is excellent (calorie count next to each item), and the people that work there could not be nicer. The indoor pool is very small, but there is a large hot tub in the locker room that makes up for that. The steam room and sauna are very small too. The gym is small, but has a few choice pieces of equiptment that will get the job done. I have to admit I have not taken a class there yet, but I am planning to take candlelight yoga when we go in April. Overall a great place to relax with your spa girls.

I recently spent a day at in which I had the hot stone massage, a pool exercise class, lunch with the spa's winter getaway package. It was wonderful. The massage was excellent and lunch was superb. But the water aerobic class was also really good (much better than I anticipated - I had wanted the belly dancing class but the timing didn't work out.) I'm really glad I ended up with the water aerobic class instead.

I've been to most of the major spas in this area, including Elemis and Red Door. My husband got me a gift certificate here and I'm never going anywhere else! I did the Winter Wellness package, which was such a great value. The spa facillities and service was impeccable, and the food at Kensington's was outstanding! Lucky for me, I live 10 mins away!

I'm a spa lover and I've been to every spa on the shoreline in CT. I heard so many people discussing the Spa in Norwich, so I finally booked an appointment. I went in for a full day, facial, massage, mani and pedi the whole nine yards! It was amazing. The most relaxing day in my life and will always go back there, next time with some girlfriends. They offer lunch packages and drinks! I enjoyed my day, the staff was great and the products were wonderful! No doubt in my mind, I am going back.

I just returned from my first experience at a spa with my 3 girlfriends and I can't say enough about it. The rooms, all the help and treatments were fantastic. We're already talking about when we should go back. If you're thinking about doing it, don't hesitate, it's just awesome. I had the hot oil stone massage, OMG if I only knew what I've been missing all these years. My facial was also fantastic. Then I did the water arobics and loved that. There are so many things to chose from there is just not enough time. I agree with some of the other comments, that the food could use some improvement. Although our lunch and dinner were fine, but breakfast could have used some improvment. All in all I highly recommend it. Laura

Come in pieces leave whole, That is what I read on a shirt for sale in the spa's boutque and I have to say that it is the perfect phrase to describe my weekend stay. The rooms are have a charming New England feel that put you at ease. The spa area is comfortable, clean, and completely relaxing. The grounds are beautifully kept and almost made me wish I knew how to golf. I enjoyed a massage, facial, and pedicure which were all exceptional. The staff is friendly and helpful. I will surely go back to this spa and would highly recommend it to anyone.

Good Spa Just Dont Eat the Food..
By AndreaI | October 26, 2009

Our yearly girls spa weekend is often spent at the Norwich (sometime we visit Saybrook or Waters Edge). The spa facilities at the Norwich are very good. The waiting area is very crowded but I could not imagine a better way to facilitate so many people. The treatments are usually good some are better than others. I always get a great facial. The prices are comparable to other spas. My biggest complaint is the food. We eat there as little as possible choosing to eat at the Casino instead. One night we were forced to eat there and they served burnt french fries, fish and chips that were soggy and oily. And the menu prices are high especially for such poor food. We stayed in the Villas which are spacious and convenient (kitchen with all appliances) they could however use some updating. I recommend this spa but I would highly recommend eating elsewhere.

Took my Boyfriend here for his Birthday weekend. The spa is wonderful, great facility, well maintained. My massage therapist Victor would not shut-up the whole time he was giving me my treatment, which was annoying. I had probably the best facial ever by Jamie H. Tips are including in the price of the treatment. We staying in the villa's which were fine but do need updating. Had a nice dinner at the restaurant on site but it is a bit over priced. The bartenders in Ascots were both great. I would definitely return to this spa but might not stay.

Spacation Splendor
By CarlaB | July 13, 2009
4.00 out of 5 stars
Just made my annual visit to the Norwich Inn and Spa for a Girl's Spa day. We booked the Spacation Package which included 2 treatments, a fitness class, lunch and use of the facilities for the day. As usual the booking process was effortless and pleasant. The rep helps you time your treatments with your friends so you can maximize your time together. This time I had a foot massage (25mins) and a Pedicure (50 mins). Let's start with the foot massage. I would probably pass on this next time. Wanted to try it, I did, and it wasn't up to par for me. Might have been my therapist, but it wasn't deep enough and 25 mins isn't long enough. Now the pedicure on the other hand was, as usual, awesome. In fact, the foot massage I received during my pedicure was much better than my actual foot massage treatment. At any rate - this is a must do for me each time! I love the scrubs and the exfoliation, the massage, and of course my newly painted toes! You won't be disappointed with your spa day here. You get a beautiful robe and flip flops for the day which you can meander the whole day in. We took in some sunshine on the patio during out off time. Lunch was excellent! Had to take 1/2 of it home - that's how much food you get! Yoga was relaxing and challenging - just the right balance. I've also taken the aerobics class which is equally awesome. The steam room, sauna and hot tub are a welcome pleasure in between treatments - especially with the availability of the ice soaked washcloths to bring down your temp after all that heat! By the afternoon you're ready for a nap and just in time they bring out the afternoon tea and scones - totally yummy! So relax, and enjoy your day at the Norwich Inn and Spa and make full use of all the facilities - you'll enjoy it!

My husband and I went this past weekend to get away. The place needs some major upgrading. The pedicure/ manicure room was cramped, shabby and overly busy. The men's locker room was totally outdated. Most of the services we received were good...nothing outstanding. The places to wait for treatments were crowded and not relaxing. The staff was always courteous. All the treatments were totally booked for the weekend. We stayed in the villa which was about 5 minute walk, no sidewalks or walking trails like in other spas that we have stayed at. We ate in the dining room in the evening. The food was good but far from "spa" food...not overly imaginative. They had a wonderful jazz singer that my husband and I enjoyed. My personal feeling is that they need to invest some more money in this inn, update the facilities and improve the spa experience.

It's close to my home on Long Island so it is a short drive for what I consider a mini vacation. Over the course of a two day stay I usually have two massages a facial and a body scrub.. I love love love the meditation room. I can read and relax between and after treatments. They have a beautiful outdoor restaurant in the summer where the food for me has always been fresh and delicious. I like to have lunches out there and the pools are nice in between services also. The rooms are lovely and simple. Important to mention iIf your hungry do not order breakfast in your room, upon my very first visit at the Norwich it cost me $30 for a pot of tea a bowl of cereal and a side of fruit.. Not sure if I got toast. We walk down the block to the very local diner for breakfast or have tea and scones downstairs they are free in the morning. The restaurant, Kensingtons is also very pricey, for me I prefer to eat my dinner at the Mohegan Sun just 2 minutes by car and they have lots of nice bars and restaurants, beautiful casino, must see. The spa services are priced fairly in comparison to other spas I have visited. I really enjoy my stays here and I always recommend it to my friends but of course I don't want too many people to find out about this charming spa. Can't think of a bad experience I've had here except of course for the pricey breakfast/ I have been coming regularly for over 5 years and I highly recommend it. Thank you Norwich

after reading luke warm reviews on this spa, I was not looking forward to going but was so glad that I went. I stayed three days and had the ayervedic mud wrap with Rachel, she was wonderful, didn;t chat through the treatment and was very professional, I had a deep tissue massage with Joanne, who listened to my problems at the beginning of the massage and did a wonderful job in loosening my neck which has never been better, she spoke quietly when she needed feedback from me and It was such an excellent experience I booked another massage with her the following day, this time an 80 min swedish , once again she greeted me and asked how I was from the deep tissue the day before, asked me what my goals were for this massage, I told her relaxation, once starting the massage (after telling me to let her know if the pressure was too much or too little at any point) the only time she spoke was to ask me to gently turn onto my back. She has a wonderful touch and I will return to this spa as soon as I am visiting family over here! From the locker room, front desk, restaurant I found all to be absolutely delightful.

I, along with six other women, spent an April weekend at the Norwich Inn in 2008. From the moment we arrived the staff was attentive, friendly and professional. Each of us booked various spa services and attended different classes. Overall our experiences were excellent. Staff members went out of their way to accomodate our needs from the locker room attendants to the dining room waitstaff. The beautiful location, serene atmosphere, comfortable accomodations, and delicious food made for an outstanding weekend. I would highly recommend the Spa at the Norwich Inn and look forward to returning in the future.

I just spend the day there with my daughter. I treated her to the fall day package.($500 for the two of us.) The staff are not attentive to the guests needs, It is a self serve experience . Not once did any one ask if we needed anything, or was everything to our liking. At check out I was never asked if I enjoyed our stay. The food was OK, nothing to rave about. I will not return.

Both my husband and myself went away for a weekend retreat. I had the aroma therapy massage treatment and it was awful. Not only could I barely smell the sent but the therapist talked the entire time. It was not relaxing at all and in the end the actual massage was only so so. When the massage was finally over he did not even offer me water, I know this may seem like a nit but after any massage the therapist always will give you some water a remind you to drink plenty of it. As for my husband he also mentioned that his treatment was only sub-par and his massage also did not offer him water. This makes me wonder about the type of therapists they hire and how they are trained The other issue I has was with the Concierge- I found the day Concierge to be less then nice and she didn't seem to know what was in the surrounding area. We asked he what was their to do and the only thing she could come up with was “Antiquing” when in fact there are two Casino’s nearby a few Vineyards, the town of Mystic which has a great Aquarium all with in less then 30 minutes away. When we asked her to recommend a restaurant she could only give us one option, when I mentioned two popular restaurants that were located Casino near by she said that with only a days notice there was no way we could get a reservation before 10:30PM. We asked her to call anyway just in case. Not only did she act like she was being put out, but she came back to us and said nope only time that was available was at 10:30. So my husband and I went to the casino walked into the restaurant (Michael Jordan’s Steak House) and had no problem getting an earlier reservation. And finally, the Villas that we stayed was nice but nothing to write home about it could use to be updated. Needless to say not only will I never go back but I let my Mom who is taking a ladies weekend trip to skip it. Better choices would be Mohonk Mt. House – or if you are willing to spend a bit more $$ head up to Mirbeau Inn & Spa which is just beautiful and the service is top notch.

This was the first time we visited a spa and we loved it. I was surprised how close it was to a major road when we drove up, but once you are on the grounds, you think you are in a different world. Generally, I am not someone who sits and waits. I want to be active and doing things. I can't just sit at a pool or beach; however, for some reason, when you are in the facility or waiting for a treatment, you havea feeling of calmness and relaxation. The staff couldn't be nicer. Although I don't have experience with other spa's, my treatments were wonderful and I felt great after each one. We stayed at a villa and if there was one negative is that I didn't find the villa all that nice. Next time we'll try to stay in the main facility. Another advantage to Norwich is it's proximity to CT gambling and other places to visit. I highly recommend coming her for a 2-3 night stay.

I never have posted a review after all my spa experiences because I've always have had good experiences, some better than others, but always satisfying. I could not let this one go!! My massage therapist talked to me the whole time and was very distracting. I was man-handled. Not soothing at all. It didn't seem like he actually knew how to give a massage. He was all over the place and it actually kind of hurt. My pedicure was an absolute disgrace!! They didn't remove cuticles and did not polish toes thoroughly. I shouldn't have to go home after paying for a SPA pedicure and buy the nail polish at the store so I could finish the job. I'm so glad I remembered the color I chose. Body scrub was so-so. And thank goodness for the facial I received! It was the highlight. I was more relaxed during that service than any other and the esthetician didn't chirp during the service!! It was fantastic!! We stayed overnight in a Villa - which was pretty. Grounds were pretty. But for the amount of $$$$$$ we paid for the services and overnight stay - we shouldn't have had to pay $20 for 4 cups of coffee. Not gourmet coffee...just your average cup of joe. That's the best way to describe the whole experience.
