About Saxon Boutique Hotel, Villas & Spa, The
The Saxon Boutique Hotel, Villas & Spa offers elegant luxury in stunning surroundings distinguished by a tasteful South African aesthetic. Prior to its reopening in June 2000, the all-suite hotel was the personal residence of insurance magnate Douw Steyn and hosted Nelson Mandela during the preparation of his autobiography. The ten-acre property, set amidst landscaped gardens, welcomes guests with a hotel entrance featuring contemporary African decor that provides an eye-catching backdrop to a towering spiral staircase that winds around a gleaming glass dome.
Saxon Spa and Studio, built in 2006, occupies its own 880-square-meter facility, in which wet and dry treatments are complemented by innovative spa offerings such as chromatherapy and sound therapy.

Services
Saxon Spa and Studio opened its doors in the spring of 2006. Visitors to the freestanding spa/salon complex are greeted by four sandbox displays that shift throughout the day to represent the African continent's full spectrum of natural hues. Men and women are made equally welcome by a consulting therapist who helps guide the course of treatment. The 13,000-square-foot (1,207 square meters) facility encompasses two floors and eight treatment rooms, including hydro-capsule and sound-therapy rooms. All treatment rooms can accommodate two clients at once, should a couple wish to enjoy treatments side by side.
Hydro-capsule sessions can be customized for hydrotherapy or body wraps and are often followed by moisturizing massage to revitalize the skin. Saxon's signature sound therapy creates a healing environment for the senses as guests float on a heated waterbed in a chromatherapy-equipped room while a professional uses percussion instruments to produce soothing ambient noise. Another specialty service is the spa's Rasul (Turkish mud) ritual involving salt exfoliation, a full-body application of mineral-infused mud, and a refreshing rain shower. In addition, the extensive menu of treatments includes a broad range of massage and customized facials.
The spa restaurant and juice bar serves calorie-counted light meals and fresh fruit cocktails. Health-conscious spa-goers may also want to visit the hotel's fully equipped gymnasium or book a session with a personal trainer. Two swimming pools invite guests to take a cool dip: a 9,902-square-foot (919 square meters) indoor pool as well as an outdoor heated pool featuring underwater music.

Rooms & Dining
Saxon Hotel & Spa's origins as a private estate are discernible in its current guest accommodations. The smallest of the oversized suites is a roomy 990 square feet (92 square meters). Each of the 24 suites houses artworks and artifacts created in South Africa, a nod to ancient culture that offsets contemporary amenities such as big-screen televisions with DVD players and surround sound. Large bay windows offer idyllic pool and garden views. Business travelers will appreciate the thoughtful workstations provided, which feature multi-line telephones, fax capability, and ISDN lines. Nelson Mandela's stay on the property is commemorated with the Nelson Mandela Suite, a 3,767-square-foot (349 square meters) suite housing two bedrooms, a reception area, lounge, dining room, and butler's kitchen.
The Saxon Hotel Restaurant features an intimate atmosphere in which world-class chefs create award-winning delicacies that combine African and European influences. Vegetarian options are available at every meal. The restaurant's voluminous collection of wines can be viewed in a loft above the main dining room, and wine lovers can sample vintages and nibble on hors d'oeuvres in the Wine Tasting Cellar before dinner.

Activities
Saxon Hotel & Spa is conveniently located near the cultural, historical, and shopping destinations that have made Johannesburg an increasingly popular vacation spot among discerning travelers from around the world. A popular day activity is the Soweto Tour, which introduces visitors to the fascinating geography of Johannesburg, from the inner-city mining facilities (no longer in use but preserved for historical value) to the township atmosphere of Soweto. Many museums and memorials have been constructed here to commemorate the struggle against apartheid, including Nelson Mandela's home, now a museum.
At Nelson Mandela Square in Sandton City, a wide variety of high-end shopping options is available in addition to an array of restaurants serving a cosmopolitan mix of cuisines, from sushi to Mediterranean food. Dance presentations, musical performances, art shows, and antique markets are regularly held in the Square, under the ever-watchful eye of a six-meter-tall bronze statue of Nelson Mandela.
South Africa is also a golfer's dream, with world-class courses catering to all skill levels. These include the Royal Johannesburg Kensington Golf Club, which has two 18-hole courses with challenging river holes, and the Randpark Golf Club, whose undulating fairways provide irresistibly beautiful vistas, not to mention championship-level play.
