About Skaná Spa at Turning Stone

With the opening of the new luxurious Skaná Spa, the Oneida Indian Nation-owned Turning Stone Resort & Casino has established itself as a premier resort destination in the Northeast. The resort is situated between Utica and Syracuse in upstate New York's historic Mohawk Valley.

Opened in 1993, the property's name is derived from the Nation's history (the Oneidas were called "the people of the standing stone"). Eleven years later, an exclusive 94-suite luxury hotel called the Lodge at Turning Stone opened to serve an upscale clientele with a mixture of traditional Adirondack design and contemporary amenities. Additionally, the 33,000-square-foot Skana Spa, added to the resort in 2006, invites discerning spa-goers to indulge in up-to-the-minute spa amenities as well as treatments inspired by the rich therapeutic traditions of the Oneidas.

Golfers can take advantage of three championship 18-hole courses that incorporate the area's rolling, verdant terrain to stunning effect. Also on property are 17 restaurants offering a diverse sampling of global cuisine, an 800-seat cabaret-style showroom, and a 5,000-seat Event Center that hosts performances by major names in pop music and stand-up comedy. Guests of Turning Stone enjoy trying their luck at the property's high-energy casino, where poker, bingo, keno, and multi-game machines provide excitement around the clock.

Opened in 2006, Skaná Spa's treatment menu and spa design are founded on Native American influences. ("Skaná" is the Oneida word for peace.) A detoxifying sweat lodge and pictorial depictions of traditional longhouses pay tribute to the Oneidas' traditions and community. The 33,000-square-foot facility has 14 treatment rooms including a private VIP suite with its own herb garden. The on-site Skaná Spa Cafe serves nutritious spa cuisine for breakfast and lunch.

The spa's gentle treatments combine all-natural products (including Naturopathica and Molton Brown) and herbs used by Native American for centuries in order to promote harmony between guests and their surroundings. Signature spa treatments evoke the Oneida culture and traditional healing philosophies. The Sage Stone Massage is a holistic experience designed to induce total tranquility through the integration of sound therapy, touch therapy (with basalt stone application), and aromatic sage oil. The nourishing American Indian Enzyme Peel incorporates pumpkin fruit enzymes and beta carotene for deep cleansing and sun protection. Also, a full-service salon employs a staff of beauty professionals who administer hair, nail, waxing, and makeup services.

The Skaná Fitness Center offers strength-building and cardiovascular equipment in addition to a fully equipped group exercise studio where classes are held daily. The spa's petal-shaped mineral pool features waterfalls, whirlpools, and a distinctive sculpture.

    Rooms & Dining

The award-winning Lodge at Turning Stone features 94 boutique-style suites. All are designed to provide a lavish experience with pampering extras ranging from private balconies overlooking the golf complex to super-soft Egyptian cotton linens on all beds. The predominant neutral color scheme is enlivened by cherry wood accents and brightly colored frosted glass. Bathrooms house four-fixture tubs and spacious glassed-in showers.

The Lodge houses Wildflowers, an intimate restaurant that serves traditional Continental favorites such as striped bass in papillote, horseradish-crusted filet mignon, and traditional steak Diane in addition to low-fat and low-cholesterol options. The menu includes a variety of options served and prepared tableside.

Additional dining options available at Turning Stone include:

  • Forest Grill Steakhouse, where guests dine nightly on choice cuts, Maine lobsters, and seafood specials
  • Peach Blossom, a gourmet pan-Asian cafe with stylish, culturally authentic decor
  • Pino Bianco Trattoria, which boasts an open kitchen and a wood-burning pizza oven plus seafood, pasta, and meat dishes prepared from contemporary Italian recipes

    Activities

A wide array of fitness and relaxation opportunities are available on the property. Outdoor classes include yoga, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing in the Adirondack Mountains. Guests can also be introduced to Native American crafts through Indian beadwork and corn-husk doll-making workshops.

The resort also provides a luxury golf experience. The Atunyote Golf Club is a championship parkland course whose spectacular countryside vistas have provided a serene backdrop for several PGA Tour events, including the 2006 B.C. Open. The 18-hole, par-72 Kaluhyat Golf Club is set amid sprawling, verdant scenery broken by intermittent and dramatic elevation shifts. Shenendoah Golf Club dares duffers to try to master the challenges of its wooded parkland fairways, which were constructed according to PGA standards. Golfers shouldn't feel too intimidated, however; the Turning Stone Golf Academy helps both groups and individuals develop their game with classes and multi-day programs led by seasoned professionals.

Some of the biggest names in entertainment perform at the Event Center and the more intimate Showroom. Regular performers include Mariah Carey, Kenny G, Drew Carey, Tim McGraw, Bob Dylan, Loretta Lynn, George Carlin, and many others.

The action-packed gaming floor features more than 80 tables devoted to keno, blackjack, roulette, and high-stakes bingo in addition to a 32-table poker room and thousands of cutting-edge cashless multi-game machines.

Several popular recreational options are available nearby. The Baseball Hall of Fame in nearby Cooperstown celebrates America's pastime with historical exhibits and memorabilia collections that no true fan will want to pass by. History buffs can visit the Oriskany Battlefield, a national historic landmark, or tour neighboring Fort Stanwix, a colonial outpost used by patriots during the Revolutionary War. Guests can also take sailing or boating trips on beautiful Oneida Lake and rent boats from Oneida-owned marinas.

Great experience at Skana. Mineral pool, sauna, steam, and whirlpool were all very relaxing. Not crowded either. Great massage, and overall a great Spa experience. The casino/resort is in the middle of nowhere on an Indian reservation, so not much else in the area. The only bad thing is the casino and hotel lobby reek of cigarette smoke. The Spa is well removed from that though.Spa is great. Casino/Hotel is nice, but smoky.

This really is a beautiful and relaxing spa. I had both a facial and massage. I preferred the facial but the massage was good too. The facility itself is housed inside the Lodge at Turning Stone which is a very tranquil setting. My favorite part of this spa is it's luxurious hot tub room and mineral pool with fountain.

If you have never been to a day spa for a treatment, going to the Turning Stone Resort and having the staff at Skana treat you will set the bar very high. Upon entering the state of the art facilities of Turning Stone Resort, you are immediately swept away into a state of escape from the ordinary. The mood of the spa is soothing. The staff were helpful and professional, helping you to feel at ease, explaining the treatments.I enjoyed a luxurious body scrub with moisturizers made exclusively for the spa. I then took full advantage of the jacuzzi in the ladie's spa area, and the wonderful shower and dressing facilities, complete with amenities. If I ever found myself in Verona again, I would be staying at Turning Stone and being pampered again!

My husband and I love coming here at least once a year! And if you are coming as a couple I highly recommend the VIP suite. The Skana is the only spa I know of in upstate NY that offers a room with private tubs, steam room, sauna and shower. I don't believe there are fitness facilities available unless you are a guest at the lodge. But we are only interested in relaxing and romance, not sweating on a treadmill, so I still give this facility 5 stars.

I love coming here and try to visit at least twice a year. The spa services are top notch, the environment is lovely and the pampering superb! It is a bit expensive for this area but it is by far the nicest facility in Central New York. It compares to spas in Palm Beach and Las Vegas and is only a half hour away from home. I feel like I've been away on vacation after a visit to Skana. The Lodge is a nice place to stay and the whole Turning Stone Complex is fun and has a variety of activities.

For what they charge, someone should be nice. I spent over $600 for two people and had very poor service. From being chastised for a five minute late arrival (road work reduced the speed limit by 20 miles per hour!) to having to ask for everything (never once offered water, never shown fitness area!) - not what it should be for a top spa. Don't waste your time or your money!

I actually visited the Ashi Spa instead because it took to long for someone to reach me for an appointment so I went to the other spa on property. One of the hair stylist happened to be from Skana who was responsible for doing my sisters hair who happend to be my maid of honor. I wasn't particularly happy with her up-do the stylist was offended and complained that she couldn't please us. The stylist was supposed to do my sisters nail as well but sister of course refused so my sister didn't have her nails done for the wedding. The only reason that I know the stylist was from Skana was because the stylist who did my hair told me and was to in shock of her behavior and said people go over to skana because they think it's nicer & more expensive but that's the kind of service they get.

I spent a Friday afternoon almost totally alone here! I only saw one other lady waiting for her treatment and one in the locker room when I was leaving. All of the staff was very helpful. The robe I wore was top of the line. The towels were so big and soft. I loved the Native American theme, especially the background music. I didn't realize there was a place to work out on fitness equipment. Next time I will schedule some time there before anything else. My only minor complaint...the lights were too dim to read the nice selection of magazines while waiting for my spa treatment.
