About Sonnenalp Resort of Vail
The Fässler family has been in the hospitality business for four generations, starting nearly a century ago with a hotel in the beautiful alpine setting of Ofterschwang, Bavaria, in Germany. In 1979, the family found similar natural bounty in the area surrounding Vail, Colorado, and opened Sonnenalp Resort of Vail. Sonnenalp, which means "sun on the mountains," was completely rebuilt in 1993 and is housed in two adjacent buildings on Gore Creek. The 127 rooms consist mostly of suites decked out in authentic Bavarian furniture, plush bedding, and gas-log fireplaces to convey an intimate boutique atmosphere. The European-styled Sonnenalp Spa furthers this aura with its cozy relaxation areas, serene views of the mountains and the creek, and personalized treatments.
The hotel's centralized location, near three major ski lifts and a plethora of other outdoor and cultural activities, ensures guests a variety of ways to while away their days. Fly-fishing, snowshoeing, river rafting, and guided hikes can be arranged with local outfitters; tennis, golf, hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, and hot-air balloon trips are also offered nearby. On site, guests may participate in yoga classes, work out in the fitness center, or take a dip in the swimming pool. Three on-property restaurants dish up American, alpine, and western-style cuisines, while a bevy of lounges and eateries are situated a short distance from the property in Vail Village.

Rooms & Dining
All 127 guest rooms feature a view of either Gore Creek or Vail Village. Suites range from snug junior spaces such as the Lodgepole and Blue Spruce suites to the loft-style Millcreek suites to the sprawling two-bedroom Golden Peak, Vail Mountain, and Castle Peak suites. Each features custom-made Bavarian furniture, a gas-log fireplace, and large bathrooms with heated marble floors. Down comforters and pillows, walk-in closets, high-speed wireless Internet access, and 30-inch high-definition televisions are available in most suites. At 1,350 square feet, the largest and most equipped room is the Vail Mountain Suite. It has the aforementioned amenities plus a private master bathroom with a large soaking tub, separate shower, and double vanities; a dining room area; a fully-stocked mini bar; and a video game console with a flat-screen television monitor.
All guests staying in the suites receive a complimentary full breakfast at Ludwig's Restaurant, one of the three dining areas at Sonnenalp and the property's signature restaurant. Besides breakfast and traditional pastries, Ludwig's offers continental cuisine in an elegant-yet-inviting setting. The Swiss Chalet Restaurant, decorated like a classic Swiss lodge, has a smorgasbord of authentic alpine cuisine including fondue, raclette, and käse spätzle--cheese-filled dumplings topped with roasted onions. Meals are topped off by such desserts as Austrian apple strudel and chocolate fondue. At the casual western-style Bully Ranch Southwestern and American fare like artichoke dip, chicken wings, and avocado mushroom burgers are popular. Healthy spa menu options are available for lunch, dinner, or snacks.

Activities
Inspired by the Fässler family's original Bavarian property, the Sonnenalp Resort of Vail evokes a similar Germanic sensibility with wood beams inlaid into the stucco walls, fireplaces, and natural wood accents throughout. The hotel includes a comfortable library stocked with board games and books, as well as facilities for conferences or events that can accommodate up to 300. Just 16 miles from the resort, the 7,100-yard Sonnenalp Golf Club has a championship 18-hole golf course and pro shop that can pair golfers with top-notch instructors. The course has been recognized by Golf Digest magazine as one of their "Top 100 Resort Courses," and consistently ranks as one of the state's top courses in Colorado Golf Magazine. Additionally, the Sonnenalp Tennis Center has two clay and two hard tennis courts where guests may take private lessons or participate in the adult or junior programs.
Vail is a Mecca for outdoors enthusiasts. During winter, skiers can carve the groomed slopes of 5,289 acres of terrain accessible via 33 lifts, or roam off-piste through fresh powder in the renowned Back Bowls and Blue Sky Basin. Outfitters lead guided snowshoe tours, river rafting, and fly-fishing expeditions. Hundreds of miles of trails snake throughout the region, many of which can be explored by hiking, biking, or horseback riding. The resort even offers personal ski, snowshoe, hiking, biking, or custom guides for its Sonnenalp Guided Adventures. Those looking for cultural adventures can partake in the Vail International Dance Festival, the Taste of Vail spring food and wine festival, the Vail Film Festival, or the Bravo! Vail Valley Music Festival, as well as myriad music programs at the Gerald R. Ford Amphitheater and performances at the Vilar Center for the Arts. The Colorado Ski Museum Ski and Snowboard Hall of Fame is close by, as is the world's highest botanical garden, the Betty Ford Alpine Gardens. Camelot Balloons takes riders up in hot-air balloons for a view of the entire Vail Valley, complete with a champagne picnic breakfast.
A family-friendly destination, Sonnenalp offers kids ages 5 to 12 supervised activities in the KidVentures program at the Activities Center. Laser tag, bowling, movies, ice-skating, and snow tubing are offered with dinner in the evenings.
