About Mandarin Oriental, Prague

The Mandarin Oriental brings its brand of Asian-inflected luxury to a unique setting in Prague: a former monastery about a block from the Charles Bridge in the heart of Prague's oldest quarter, the picturesque Mala Strana. The hotel interior is modern, but the renovation was done to preserve (and show off) the buildings' original architecture, some dating back to the 14th century. The spa itself occupies a former Renaissance chapel and offers holistic, customizable treatments inspired by Eastern and Western healing practices. The staff is commended for being universally friendly and accommodating, providing the personal service on which the Mandarin Oriental prides itself.

The 99 spacious guest rooms include 22 suites, individually designed in calming natural colors and exquisite materials with subtle Asian touches. All rooms include a high-definition TV and high-speed internet access. Frequented largely by an international leisure clientele, the hotel is also equipped to handle business meetings and conferences. With its central yet peaceful setting off the main tourist route, the hotel provides a convenient location for visitors to explore the rest of Prague's culinary and cultural offerings. The stylish hotel bar and restaurant quickly became fixtures of the upscale dining scene in the city.

The architectural highlight of the spa is the glass floor in the lobby. It's a display case, of sorts, there to let guests see the illuminated remnants of a 1330 Gothic church discovered during the restoration. The spa, at 1,400 square feet the largest in Prague, occupies two floors and has seven treatment rooms, including two couples' suites. In addition to a range of massages, facials, wraps and scrubs, the spa offers Time Rituals™, blocks of time which begin with a foot massage during which the therapist and guest jointly decide on a combination of treatments based on the guest's individual needs and desires on that day. Body treatments (110 minutes long) incorporate traditional massage techniques and modalities directed at a specific goal-the Refresh treatment is designed for the jet-lagged traveler, while the Rescue treatment is counters the effects of pollution and the environment with deep breathing and relaxation. And a facility so steeped in history doesn't ignore local traditions: The Linden Blossom Scrub incorporates the scent of the linden, the Czech Republic's national tree, which holds a central position the country's mythology.

The private heat and water facilities include a Rasul, two steam showers, and the Vitality Pool, all available as part of the Time Rituals™ or separately. There is also a range of facials, manicure/pedicures and makeup application by request.

Rooms & Dining

The rooms are largely similar in design-sumptuous silks, polished wood and stone inspired by the Orient mix easily with the building's rich architectural elements. Price variations are a function of size, view, and historical detail. Expansive suites with large living rooms (including the hotel's three signature suites, the Presidential, Lazar, and Oriental Suites) have distinctive design features such as vaulted ceilings, high windows, and polished wood floors; many offer views of the picturesque side streets of Mala Strana or the Prague Castle. The Superior and Deluxe rooms are smaller in size and tend to face the garden. All rooms have high-definition flat screens in the bedrooms and bathrooms, home theater systems, CD/DVD players, and heated floors in the bathrooms, which are stocked with the same aromatherapy products used in the spa.

The hotel's main restaurant, Essensia, offers a two-part menu of European and Asian dishes, including some of the city's best Thai and Indian food. The menu emphasizes fresh, high-quality ingredients and authentic preparations; healthy spa dishes are highlighted. The restaurant consists of five intimate connected rooms with vaulted ceilings. There is also a bar, Barego, and the imposing Monastery Lounge for afternoon tea. For special occasions, a private dining room is available in the vaulted wine cellar. Barego, which the Prague Post says serves "the best martini in Prague," is a sleekly modern, dramatically lit affair with a full bar, a selection of Czech beers, and signature cocktails.

Activities

The hotel offers a full-service fitness center, including personalized fitness sessions, Pilates mat classes and yoga instruction, all by request. There are jogging and hiking trails throughout the scenic Petrin Hill park just a block away from the hotel. For meetings, conferences, weddings, and other groups, the hotel has an elegant Baroque colonnade with soaring ceilings, two large ballrooms and a central private garden.

The city itself, however, is the main attraction. Prague Castle is a (sometimes steep) 20-minute walk and many of the city's major sights are just steps away from the hotel. Walking tours of Prague, led by local professionals, cover the best of the city or tailor their focus to particular themes, including architectural marvels, the Jewish quarter, Mozart, Kafka, or famous pubs. Several bike companies offer guided tours of the city, as well as maps and rentals for those looking to explore on their own. The hotel will book a court at Stvanice Island, the oldest tennis club in the Czech Republic where Martina Navratilova has played. Fans of classical music and opera will also find plenty to delight them-the National Theatre, the State Opera, the Rudolfinum, and the Municipal House all host a range of musical offerings.
