Surrounded by the Sonoran Desert foothills, picturesque Santa Catalina Mountains, century-old giant saguaro cactuses, and a 27-hole Jack Nicklaus-designed golf course, the Westin La Paloma Resort & Spa in Tucson offers true southwestern character. Opened in 1986, La Paloma, Spanish for "the dove," blends architectural elements from Native American, Spanish colonial, Mexican, and Anglo-American groups that have resided in the region. Twisting staircases, Spanish-tiled scalloped rooftops, wide foyers, and subdued pumpkin, blue, maroon, and marigold tones can be found throughout the property, its 487 guest rooms, and its 9,300-square-foot Elizabeth Arden Red Door Spa.

Within the surrounding desert countryside are landmarks such as Colossal Cave and the Kitt Peak Observatory. Horseback riding and jeep excursions are also nearby. The resort's facilities include three outdoor heated pools, ten well-lit tennis courts, and the French-inspired Janos restaurant headed by James Beard award-winning chef Janos Wilder.

The Elizabeth Arden Red Door Spa is a contemporary facility designed with bold artwork, leather sofas, southwestern-style armoires, and, of course, vibrant red front doors. In addition to the spa's five nail-care stations, four hair salons, a men's and women's relaxation lounge with private saunas and steam rooms, and outdoor whirlpool, there are also 18 body treatment rooms that include aesthetic rooms for facials, body wraps and skin care; massage and body treatment rooms; a Vichy shower; a hydrotherapy room; and two private outdoor cabana-style massage rooms.

Licensed aestheticians and certified massage therapists tailor treatments to individual guests' needs. Services could include anti-aging or anti-oxidant facials, body wraps, hydrotherapy, or desert stone, shiatsu, or deep-tissue massage. A daily spa membership is available for resort guests that includes unlimited use of eucalyptus saunas, secluded co-ed heated whirlpools, steam rooms, men's and women's relaxation rooms, and personalized services. Pre- or post-treatment, the Red Door juice bar offers a selection of healthy snacks and smoothies. Three outdoor heated pools--one with a 177-foot waterslide and another with a swim-up bar--complement the spa facilities.

Rooms & Dining

Designed with Native American, American West, and Spanish influences, the resort has arching windows that provide views of the 10,000-foot Santa Catalina Mountain peaks and surrounding desert landscape. The 487 golden-hued guest rooms have tiled entryways, crown molding, cherry wood furniture, Westin's signature Heavenly Bed, a private balcony or patio, and a wood-burning fireplace. The oversize bathroom comes with granite countertops, double vanities, and a separate bathtub and shower.

At the heart of the resort's main building is the Desert Garden Bistro, a six-tiered restaurant illuminated with lantern-shaped sconces. Guests can be seated near the main lobby, with its 36-foot windows, or on one of the resort's outdoor terraces overlooking the pools. It serves a variety of trendy bistro-style Mediterranean, French, Italian, and American entrees. Janos restaurant offers French-inspired southwestern cuisine prepared by owner and executive chef Janos Wilder, recognized by the James Beard Foundation in 2000 as best chef in the southwest. He uses only locally grown produce as well as fresh seafood and game flown in from around the world in his recipes. Vintages include more than 700 selections of red wines and a large selection of whites. JBAR serves Mexican, Latin American, and Caribbean fare. The swim-up Sabino's Pool Bar & Grill, the Courtside Deli (located at the tennis courts), and the Half-Way House Snack Bar are ideal for snacks, light fare, or drinks. The La Paloma Country Club North Patio overlooks the nine green, while Espresso Sunrise is perfect for an early morning or mid-day pick-me-up.
