American in Allgau for Schrothkur

Calling all Americans (or anyone) to try something new (old). The 185 year old Schrothkur tradition was truly and experience and the Hotel Sonne takes care of you through the entire process. This year (September) I took a wonderful trip to a very Southern (Bavarian) location in Germany (Obserstaufen). I was a female traveling alone and had a truly wonderful time. Just take your Garmin and go. Don't worry about language barriers, you can find someone at the hotel anywhere you look that speaks English and can help you along. You can find more information on the internet about the Schrothkur but the Hotel Sonne was a wonderful place to experience the Kur. Along with the owner and all the staff, as well as the other guests, I felt right at home. I met new friends from many different countries. And, since everyone speaks a different language and/or dialect, we we all managed to speak English together and have a truly worldly experience. We even got a kick out of my hand held translator and some of the translations! The hotel Sonne is just the right size and was extremely clean. They had a super staff at the front desk that you can email or call in advance to help with all your arrangements (just ask to speak in English if you need). And, you can continue to seek their help and advice throughout your trip. They have two restaurants, which was super for those on the Kur. When you are on the Kur, you are on a special diet. They had one restaurant dedicated to those people on the Kur. That was fabulous as it made being on the Kur and on a special diet, much easier (did not have to see all the other food). Everyone in the hotel that is on the Kur eats in the same restaurant together. This is where you begin to make new friends. Lunch and dinner are served in the Kur restaurant (for those that are on the Schrothkur) and the wait staff (thanks Frau Hilde Fischer) and the food is fabulous. If I had any questions, they were eager to clarify and explain. After the evening meal, most of the Kur people spent time together in the panorama lounge (Panoramahalle) or the Stiessbergstuble (another bar, very authentic German, with music every night). Many of the town folks come from all over Obserstaufen to join in the fun. The hotel always had something going. One night it was a mini Okoberfest, the next night a fashion show, the next night something else. I truly did not lack for things to do. Be sure to ask for the daily program in English if you need. They bring it to your room daily. One of the young ladies behind the front desk (Ria), who is in Marketing, realized I needed my brochure in English and then from that day on, she made sure I had it in English. Made it easier to understand everything going on at the hotel for the day. One of the things you need to take advantage of are the hikes that take place daily. Just go to the Sports center and ask one of the friendly people there (thanks Blondie or Stephan) or find the sign up sheet. They typically started in the early afternoon. Be sure to bring some nice, sturdy hiking boots, as you will be enjoying the Bavarian Alps. We walked into Austria more than once, and had panorama views of Germany, Austria, and Switzerland--just BEAUTIFUL. Of course, the hotel has a spa where you can get all kinds of spa treatments with very good massage therapists. They have a Salon to get anything Salon related done. They have a Boutique called Corinna Roy with fabulous clothes. Corinna herself is there to help you with anything you need--even custom. She also runs the fashion shows in the evenings. And they have another beauty salon where they will to body scrubs, facials, and make up ( you can purchase make up as well). I happened to be lucky enough to be there during Viehscheid (sounds like FeeScheit), which is a ceremonial driving down the cattle from the mountain pastures into the valley for autumn. If you have ever heard of, "Party till the cows come home," this MUST be where it comes from! Also, arranged my trip to coincide with the real Oktoberfest but I must say, I would go to the real Oktoberfest first before doing the Schrothkur. Hope this helps provide some detailed information to inspire others to experience the Hotel Allgau Sonne. It was a wonderful trip. p.s. I lost 8 pounds the first week, none the second (normal), and 8 the following week upon my return. The cleansing diet truly works and I am still reaping the after rewards.
