Sensitive skin is often used as a blanket term used to cover a wide range of skin conditions from itching, dryness or eczema, to acne, rosacea or even razor bur for men.
Having sensitive skin doesn’t automatically mean missing out on the benefit of a facial. There are a range of very gentle procedures and products that are designed specifically for sensitive or irritation prone skin and an equally wide range of skin conditions.
All skin needs exfoliation to remove built-up dead skin, but this needs to be done gently. Facials that use enzymes to exfoliate work very well, because they don’t irritate the skin. This is often followed by a soothing serum and mask. Many sensitive skin facials finish off with a moisturizer that is specially formulated to reduce redness and calm inflammation.
If you have sensitive skin the initial consultation, the skin analysis and the aftercare advice will be of utmost importance, so be sure to talk to your aesthetician and be open and honest about any concerns you may have.
The procedure is likely to be similar to that of the Deep Cleansing Facial, although the aesthetician may avoid certain aspects which are known to cause irritation to the skin such as steam, mechanical exfoliation (opting for a chemical exfoliation instead) and extraction using a tool (extracting using the fingers and a cotton pad is known to be gentler).
