Look Cool

Lake Placid's Whiteface Lodge & Spa is a chic winter playground

by Melisse Gelula

It's not just Olympians who love Lake Placid (although the town has twice hosted the Winter Olympic Games)—fashionable followers of winter sports have been coming to this showpiece of the Adirondack region in upper New York State since the 19th century. Whiteface Lodge & Spa, which has views of its 4,800-foot namesake mountain, re-creates the great camps of that era so convincingly that it's easy to mistake the resort, built in 2005, for a historical landmark. The architecture is log-cabin luxury, with peaked timber rafters, fireplaces galore and towering stone chimneys--and it houses a terrifically staffed six-room spa with a winning menu of warming treatments. The wilderness playground comes right up to the Lodge grounds. Pastimes, like cross-county skiing, are on the low-tech side and the vibe is low-key, making Whiteface Lodge a perfect backdrop for active types who also just like to chill out.
