At the time of her launch in 2004, the 1,132-foot (345 meters) Queen Mary 2 was the largest passenger ship ever built. The ship can accommodate approximately 2,500 passengers and 1,200 crew members on its 14 decks. The prevailing aesthetic on board is reminiscent of the lavish, stylish luxury liners that traveled the Atlantic in the days before intercontinental air travel. Features such as sports pavilions, bars, lounges, a theatre, and a grand ballroom with a 12-foot (3.8 meters) ceiling provide appropriately luxurious surroundings for a spa dedicated to total rejuvenation in the famous Canyon Ranch style.
SERVICES & CLASSES
Canyon Ranch SpaClub aboard Queen Mary 2 encompasses two decks of pampering and fitness facilities close to the ship's 360-degree observation deck. Views of the Atlantic are accessible from the beauty and skin care center, which has 24 massage, body, and skincare treatment rooms. Use of the Aqua Therapy Center-equipped with a thalassotherapy pool, deluge waterfall, sauna, aromatic steam room, and thermal suite--is complimentary with spa treatments.
A staff of qualified trainers and instructors leads the spa's organized fitness activities, which include one-on-one assessments and weight loss consultations, as well as professional body composition analysis. Specialized wellness offerings are available for those with specific concerns, such as pregnant women, guests suffering from chronic pain, and those diagnosed with high blood pressure. Guests can also learn to live well through dietary adjustments by meeting with a nutritionist who is trained in the Canyon Ranch-exclusive technique of Nutritional Intelligence. This modality draws on the latest scientific advancements to assist those in need of a healthful eating plan for life.
Gifted therapists administer a variety of rejuvenating treatments based on techniques honed over decades at Canyon Ranch resort locations. Canyon Ranch Stone Massage uses small, smooth, heated basalt stones coated in essential oil for deeply penetrating relaxation over 80 minutes. The SpaClub also offers Rasul ceremonies for individuals or couples, in which self-applied purifying muds mix with therapeutic steam in an exotically decorated chamber modeled after ancient Middle Eastern palaces.
If ocean views make you long to be submerged in cool water, Queen Mary 2 has five adult pools (two of which are indoors) and two children's pools perfect for laps or a lazy soak.
COMPLEMENTARY AND ALTERNATIVE
DINING & FACILITIES
Facilities & Amenities
Queen Mary 2 complements Canyon Ranch SpaClub's varied health and wellness offerings with more recreation options than a guest could possibly take part in, even in the course of a transatlantic voyage. Illuminations, a full-size planetarium, exposes visitors to the wonders of outer space, while also serving as a lecture hall and cinema. Renowned speakers often visit the ship to deliver a lecture or lead a seminar, events that are replayed on the internal television station in case guests were occupied at the spa the first time around.
At the spa facility, children are out of sight but never out of mind, thanks to several programs devoted to childrens' activities. Two camps (one for kids aged two to seven, the other for eight-to-twelve-year-olds) are run by caring professionals out of a dedicated childrens' area with a splash pool, computers, and an array of educational and fun activities. Supervised children's dinners are held in the Chef's Galley every evening. Parents can feel free to step out at the disco, casino, or Commodore jazz club, as nine English nannies are on hand for babysitting until midnight.
Seven classrooms are the site of Cunard ConnXions workshops on cultural topics ranging from modern art to filmmaking. More than 300 commissioned works of art are housed on the ship, including a museum-style exhibit devoted to the history of transatlantic sea travel.
Sports facilities include a basketball court and a paddle tennis court. Virtual-reality golf lets players get the feel of the fairway without leaving the ship.
Rooms & Dining
Queen Mary 2 follows the pattern of its classical luxury-liner predecessors, which offered separate, ultra-luxurious decks with VIP amenities. Grand Duplexes, Duplex Apartments, Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth Suites, and Royal Suites are all loaded with special features such as marble bathtubs, expansive balconies, and private exercise equipment. These extra-spacious accommodations range in size from 506 square feet (47 square meters) to 2,249 square feet (209 square meters). Spacious by cruise ship standards, standard staterooms provide about 200 square feet (19 square meters) of space as well as balconies and plush furnishings.
Each guest party has a reserved table for all meals according to its level of accommodations. The exclusive Princess Grill and the Queens Grill serve sumptuous cuisine, while the three-story Britannia Restaurant evokes dining salons of the past. Queen Mary 2 also houses a number of adventurous restaurants for those who thrive on variety. The Kings Court houses four dining rooms, each with its own culinary specialty: meat dishes at the aptly named Carvery, Asian cuisine at Lotus, trattoria-style fare at La Piazza, and the interactive Chef's Galley, where daily cooking demonstrations reveal the secrets of the kitchen.
The extremely popular Todd English restaurant serves Mediterranean cuisine, both indoors and al fresco. Also on board are the Golden Lion Pub, where classic pub fare can be enjoyed while revelers cheer on their favorite teams; the casual poolside Boardwalk Cafe; and the Winter Garden tea room, where European tea-time traditions are observed each afternoon.
Canyon Ranch-approved dishes can be ordered at each meal from the spa cuisine menu.
