An anti-ageing facial can bring you many benefits, and if the right products are used by knowledgeable professionals, they do work. The effects are not permanent, but they are real.
Anti-ageing facials focus on improving the look of your skin and slowing down rather than reversing the ageing process. Your skin is considered ‘mature’ from the age of about 40 but the ageing process usually starts during your thirties.
As you get older your skin loses its elasticity and plumpness as both your elastin and collagen supplies diminish. Skin becomes thinner and dryer and skin cells take longer to renew resulting in a duller complexion.
Anti-ageing facials typically aim to remove the topmost layer of dead skin cells to reveal the newer more vibrant skin underneath by using products and procedures that boost collagen production, rehydrate the skin cells and tighten the skin to give a more youthful appearance.
Anti-ageing facials vary from spa to spa but tend to include chemical peels, collagen masks, and special serums that have antioxidants like vitamin C or ingredients like hyaluronic acid (which attracts water to cells exfoliates and nourishes the skin to promote clear, well-hydrated skin).
Anti-ageing facials can be very effective, but a lot depends on the spa practitioner, the products and procedures used and whether you follow up with a good home care routine. Anti-ageing facials can be more effective when used in conjunction with treatments which boost collagen production (like LED lights for example.

Microdermabrasion and anti-ageing
Microdermabrasion is a highly effective anti-ageing treatment that can deliver dramatic results; as with many treatments however, the effectiveness is very dependent on the skill and experience of the aesthetician.
Microdermabrasion facials exfoliate the skin deeply without the need for an anaesthetic and the benefits are many: a microderm reduces fine lines and wrinkles, helps to smooth areas of rough skin, decreases the appearance of scarring and other pigmentation irregularities as well as decreases pore size. Microdermabrasion can also make it easier for high-tech skin care products to penetrate into the deeper layers of the skin.
There are two types of Microdermabrasions, the original crystal microdermabrasion and the newer version using a diamond-tip.
Crystal microdermabrasion uses a wand like tool to spray aluminium oxide crystals onto the skin to buff and vacuum away the top layer of skin cells. The depth of treatment is controlled by strength of the vacuum and volume of crystals expelled, all under the control of the aesthetician.
The wand will be passed over your skin twice or three times depending on the thickness of your skin or if there is an area that needs special attention, like a scar or brown spot. While the results are often dramatic the procedure can be a little uncomfortable, especially around the sensitive tissue of the mouth and nose which may be a little red afterwards.
Diamond-tip microdermabrasion also uses a wand-like tool but with a diamond-tip to exfoliate and a vacuum to remove the debris. There are many different tips with various grades of roughness, and the aesthetician will select the correct one for your skin type and condition. The procedure causes less discomfort and is a better option for those with more sensitive skin.
For the best results, it is generally recommended that you undergo a series of treatments leaving a fortnight between sessions. Your aesthetician will advise you on the appropriate programme of treatment for your skin type and condition.
You will need to be careful with your skin a few days after the microdermabrasion as it will be vulnerable to the elements and particularly the sun.
