One-to-one Pilates sessions are a great way to improve your posture, feel balanced, strengthen your core – and of course, the detailed instruction and attention you receive from your Pilates instructor will really help you achieve your goals. London-based Pilates teacher Eleah Waters outlines the top 10 reasons to try a one-to-one Pilates session:
1. Get personal
Your introduction to private Pilates will begin with an initial consultation to look at the way you stand, your posture type and movement patterns. Your Pilates teacher can then tailor an exercise programme based on your body and goals.
2. Security in numbers
Feel confident that as you work with your teacher they will know if/when to inter-refer you should you need some hands-on work. Your teacher should be connected to a network of therapists offering physiotherapy, osteopathy, massage and other complementary therapies.
3. Get confidence
Have you ever been to a group Pilates class and felt lost, like you weren’t doing the movements correctly? In a one-to-one Pilates class, the teacher’s eyes are only on you – so you can feel confident that you are moving well as you exercise. Your teacher will give you tips and adjustments so that you can work toward perfecting your form.
4. Feel Balanced
Pilates strengthens weak muscles and stretches short, tight muscles making you work with efficient movement patterns.
5. Reduce pain
Pain is often reduced when the body is brought back to a better state of balance. When your body can start easily moving in what we term as “neutral”, less stress is then placed on areas of the body that were originally suffering.
6. Feel motivated
Your Pilates teacher will know when to get you to flow, when to work you hard, add weights, or make you laugh.
7. Set goals
You can set goals with your teacher and let him/her know what your intentions are. Whether you’re aiming to understand your body better within six weeks or even work toward trekking the Inca Trail, your teacher can help you achieve your goals.
8. Commit to your health
Working together with a Pilates teacher will provide you with a reason to stay focused and keep an ongoing commitment to staying fine-tuned and strong.
Relax, detoxify, strengthen your immune system and feel good.
10. An hour for you
How often do you get to drop everything and focus on yourself for an hour? Work with someone who can read your body literally. Give an hour of focus into your body – it is a lot of fun, too!
Eleah Waters has been practising Pilates in a variety of ways for over nine years. Her practice started out as a rehabilitation method for an injury whilst studying contemporary dance. From there Pilates became an invaluable tool helping to create balance, posture, efficient bio-mechanics, and strength in the whole body. Eleah always thinks on her feet and manipulates exercises to be specific to the posture and/or injuries of her clients. Clients say they feel strong from top to toe, more aware of their physicality and super relaxed after her dynamic, flowing sessions.
