Spread Eagle Hotel is one of the oldest coaching Inns that still exists in the UK, located in the historic town of Midhurst it’s past dates back to the 1430s. Today it takes pride as a quintessentially English historic hotel, packed full of rich heritage with modern comforts of the modern day. Only a stone’s throw away from antiques, tea shops and the South Downs National Park, this historic town offers guests access to variety of experiences during their stay.
A visit to The Spread Eagle Hotel is like being transported to a time where Tudor royalty walked its corridors. There are so many little touches throughout the property which are reminiscent of a time when the likes of Henry VIII and Elizabeth I lay their heads to rest for the night. Exposed ancient oak beams, stain glass windows, original Tudor artefacts, framed pictures and tapestry dress the lounges, walls and common spaces; and the original fire places roar creating a cosy atmosphere.
I was lucky enough to experience the two day Yoga retreat at The Spread Eagle Hotel led by Elaine Vaughan, so here’s my round up of what to expect.
Getting to The Spread Eagle Hotel & Spa
It’s hard to believe that this beautifully historic property exists so conveniently close to London! I started my 50 minute journey from London Waterloo to Haslemere followed by a quick 15 min taxi to The Spread Eagle. This was just enough time for me to leave the stress of the city behind and prepare myself for my first yoga retreat.
What to expect on a yoga retreat at The Spread Eagle Hotel & Spa
A brief itinerary was sent to me before I had arrived so I knew what to expect during my first yoga retreat. I was surprised at how much was included and the variety of different things that I would be doing at The Spread Eagle during my stay. Here is an overview of what the next 24 hours had in store, the agenda was action packed and I was excited;
- Registration & tour
- Welcome drinks & a talk on yoga, wellness and healthy living
- Relax time at the Spa & a Temple treatment
- Yoga session
- Canapés and talk by Elaine Vaughan
- Meditation & breathe work
- Yoga session
- Access to spa facilities
Experience The Spa
The Spread Eagle hotel is a very historic building and it’s spa gives it a contemporary feel. The spa has high ceilings and is within a glass fronted building allowing the space to be filled with natural light and creating the illusion of more space. Central to this space is the pool, a decent size and heated which is great! And poolside you’ll also find a Jacuzzi Spa Pool and a Scandinavian Sauna. The spa it’s self isn’t huge but it is a great place to escape and take time out whether it’s to relax and unwind or just to reflect on the day.
There are three treatment rooms which are located between reception and the spa and this is where I had my treatments. I had chosen the shoulder neck and back massage for the 25 min treatment included in my yoga retreat package and also added the My Kinda Skin Facial as a treat for myself too.
My Kinda Skin Facial is a 70 minute bespoke prescription facial tailored to my skin type and my areas of concern. My therapist Polly was great she made me feel comfortable in the room and discussed my areas of concern, what I was hoping to achieve from the results and what areas I wanted concentrating on. She started by cleansing my face in preparation for the treatment using Temple spa products; Go Easy to remove eye makeup, Dual Act to cleanse and the Toning essence mist which does a final cleanse of any remaining traces.
This was followed by the Power Breakfast a nutritious scrub & mask which included ingredients such as honey, oats, apple, pear, papaya, strawberry juice and more. The treatment was divine and also included another face mask; a scalp, face, hand and arm massage, leaving me feeling relaxed and my skin with a healthy glow.
My facial was followed with a 25 min Media Drift away neck, back and shoulder massage, Polly used Temple Spas Drift away which soothed my aching muscles and as she massaged this product into the areas of tension, I could feel it melting away. I had recently built up quite a lot of tension across my shoulders and back, Polly applied the right amount of pressure during my treatment, leaving me feeling flexible and more comfortable after the treatment & ready for the rest of my yoga retreat.
The Yoga & nutritional advice
The yoga retreat and the nutritional talks are led by Elaine Vaughan, she has over 30 years of experiencing in the practice of Hath Yoga and her two day retreat is designed for beginners and would also be suitable for someone looking to take their practice to the next level or just someone who wants to give this experience ago.
After our welcome drinks on the day of our arrival Elaine gave us an informal talk about the benefits of Yoga, her experience and information on how wellness and healthy living go hand in hand with the practice of yoga. This was great as it gave us the opportunity to get to know Elaine and the other 7 people on the retreat a lot better too. Our first yoga session took place in the mid-afternoon, this was a session of restorative yoga designed to help centre our breath and body, align the physical with the mental and relax in preparation for the rest of the workshop.
There is definitely a benefit to escaping the environment you’re most familiar with to really concentrate on yourself as you let go of all your tensions and feel very present!
Day two began with an early morning breath work session (optional) which was a great way to get energised and ready for the day. This was followed by an hours Vinyasa flow yoga session which reinvigorated and really stretched my body and awakened my mind ready for the journey home.
Throughout this yoga retreat Elaine imparted great tips and knowledge about our bodies, nutrition and mental wellbeing which I have definitely put into daily practice.
