Spring is the season for rejuvenation and the perfect time to eat leaner and cleaner. Spring cleaning applies to our bodies as well as our abodes. We may feel inspired to actually tackle the oven and clean inside the windows. Likewise it is natural for our bodies to tune in with the rhythm of nature and recharge.
A gentle dietary cleanse can help shed the heaviness of winter, reboot the digestion, improve sleep and create an inner glow that radiates throughout your whole being. Here is a simple plan that will help kick-start some good habits.
If possible take some time away from your normal daily routine, especially if you are very stressed and busy. Being in a relaxed state will make the whole process much smoother. Long bank holiday weekends provide the perfect time to do a cleanse. Cancel all social plans and get out the boxsets, light a candle and cleanse away.
At least 3 days before your cleanse gradually eliminate black tea, coffee and alcohol. If you experience a caffeine withdrawal headache soothe the way with green tea which contains less caffeine. On rising start the day with a mug of warm water and half of a squeezed lemon to cleanse, alkalise and initiate digestion. Pull back on white carbohydrates such as potatoes, bread, cakes, biscuits, pasta, pastry and white rice. Avoid heavy meat dishes and opt for fish, turkey, eggs, nuts, seeds and tofu with steamed greens. Wean yourself off artificial sweeteners and diet drinks. Start increasing your pure water intake. Try going to bed earlier too.
This day will help transit you into lighter eating in preparation for the true cleansing day.
Drink half a squeezed lemon and warm water on rising. Aim to drink 5 vegetable based juices throughout the day. One at breakfast, mid morning, lunch, mid afternoon and dinner time.
Cleansing combinations include – beetroot, carrot, ginger and apple and broccoli, kale, parsley, celery and apple.
Along with your juices have some berries and pineapple or a small bowl of chia porridge for breakfast, a big superfood salad for lunch of mixed leaves, beetroot, quinoa, grated apple, carrot, nuts and seeds and some lightly steamed vegetables with a beetroot dressing for dinner. Early to bed.
Day 2– Cleansing (extendable for up to 8 days for deeper cleansing)
Lemon and warm water on rising together with the five cleansing juices throughout the day. Have light soups or broths at meal times if you feel the need for a little more substance. This ‘liquid only’ diet lightens the digestive load to enable the detoxification system to dig a little deeper. It will be at this stage you may feel some cleansing symptoms as toxins move through and out of the body. These can include lethargy, headaches, aching joints, vagueness and skin breakouts. This is perfectly normal and demonstrates your body has the capability and vitality to clear itself of accumulated debris. Energy levels will pick up and you will soon be experiencing a renewed sense of wellbeing and lightness.
Day 3 – Introduction back to normal diet
This last day eases you back into a normal routine after a dynamic period of cleansing. It is important to choose foods that are light and easier to digest and it is especially important that you chew your food thoroughly to aid digestion.
Lemon and warm water on rising together with the five cleansing juices throughout the day. For breakfast have a small bowl of Bircher muesli made with coconut milk. For lunch opt for lightly steamed spiralised courgette and carrots with a slow roasted sauce made with tomatoes and red peppers. For dinner steam or grill some fish of your choice with seasonal vegetables and a drizzle of extra virgin olive and lemon. If you fancy a sweet treat make a dessert with ripe avocado, raw cacao and coconut milk, top with raspberries.
Time to reap the rewards of your labour. You should by now be enjoying enhanced energy levels, clearer thought processes, better sleep and clearer skin. Daily challenges will become easier armed with your renewed sense of health and vitality.
