The beautiful city of Edinburgh has been a buzz with excitement during the month of August, with the Fringe festival in full swing. As the festival concludes tonight with the traditional firework display, we’re reflecting on the attractions that make Edinburgh a great place to visit (at any time of year!). After an exciting and eventful Saturday exploring the sights, catching comedy shows and sipping on cocktails (including the amazing pornstar martini slushies at Tonic!), a chilled girly get together at the spa was the perfect way to end the weekend celebrations!
A hidden city escape
My friend and I headed to PURE Spa & Beauty, located inside Debenhams in Ocean Terminal shopping centre. PURE Spa & Beauty is an award-winning spa and beauty group founded in Edinburgh with locations also in Aberdeen, Glasgow and London. Their philosophy is simple; to combine essential spa and beauty treatments in one convenient place.
As we walked in we were immediately greeted by the friendly and welcoming staff. The day spa itself features 3 spa treatment rooms, a relaxation room and infra-red sauna. Plus the beauty salon has 3 treatment rooms, full mani-pedi areas and dedicated tanning room. The shopping centre and spa didn’t seem too busy for a rainy Sunday in Edinburgh and one great thing about PURE Spa & Beauty is the spas are open 7 days a week, early to late allowing you to unwind at a time to suit you and your busy schedule.
We went for the ‘Spa In The City’ package and were delighted with the 90 minute experience including use of the infra-red sauna, PURE Foot ritual, Swedish back massage & Elemis booster facial.
The Infra-red Sauna Experience
To begin, we were accompanied to the changing room where lockers were already stocked with a robe & flip flops for each of us. This is also the room where the infra-red sauna is situated and where the dim lighting, soft spa music & soothing scents were a delight for all the senses.
We got ready for our 30 minutes in the infra-red sauna session included in our Spa in the City package, and the helpful and friendly staff member explained the benefits of the detoxifying and calorie burning treatment. The infra-red rays gently penetrate the lower levels of the skin to rid the body of toxins and relax the muscles, ideal prior to a massage!
After the sauna, we showered and headed to the relaxation room, where our therapists met us and escorted us to our individual treatment rooms.
The PURE Spa Treatment
My therapist was the lovely Pauline. We began with the PURE Foot ritual; a gentle exfoliation & moisturising treatment. This was also a great chance to chat about my skin type for the facial, and my areas of tension for the massage treatment. The PURE foot ritual really helped me relax during this consultation, and Pauline was able to gain a good understanding of what I was looking for.
Then it was time for the invigorating Swedish back massage. This is a classic massage, which I found incredibly relaxing and eased the tension I had been holding onto in my shoulders – as well as increasing oxygen in the blood helping to remove toxins (including those cheeky cocktails from Saturday).
Finally, I thoroughly enjoyed the Elemis booster facial. My therapist tailored the treatment to my skin needs, balancing out my combination skin leaving it cleansed, rejuvenated & silky soft. Furthermore, Pauline gave me great recommendations for products to use for my skin post-treatment and answered any questions I had.
Once the treatment was over I rejoined my friend in the relaxation room and we both left the spa feeling refreshed and rested.
Overall, I would highly recommend the spa and the treatments and I personally can’t wait to go back. It’s no wonder PURE Spa & Beauty are celebrating their 16th Birthday this August – they are experts at what they do, the staff are excellent and have a lot of useful tips when it comes to “Spa in the City”. Plus I believe the ‘Spa In The City’ package is an excellent value for money at £69 per person and the ideal way to spend some time with a best friend, partner or some much needed me-time.
