What is Microdermabrasion?
Microdermabrasion is a form of facial that uses either crystal or diamond-tip technology to gently scrape away the surface layers of the skin. Some therapists may spray particles of aluminum oxide or sodium bicarbonate onto the face and then use a vacuum to remove the spray, along with the surface layer of your skin.
Although microdermabrasion sounds pretty harsh, especially for the face, it isn’t an invasive procedure.
What is microdermabrasion good for?
Microdermabrasion is suitable for all different skin types, however this treatment is primarily aimed at older people and those suffering from common skin complaints such as:
Fine lines and wrinkles
Scars, including those caused by acne
Uneven skin tone
Sun-damage, including age spots
What are the side effects to microdermabrasion?
Microdermabrasion doesn’t cause any permanent damage, however some side effects can last for up to 3 months after your treatment. Redness and swelling is a common side effect. Some may experience acne, enlarged pores and a change in skin colour, although this is quite rare and will usually vanish a week after the treatment. In extremely rare circumstances some people have experienced slight scarring and infections, but these only occur if the therapist isn’t well-trained.

Know Before You Go
Microdermabrasion isn’t an invasive procedure, although if the traditional crystal tool is used it can be slightly uncomfortable. If your treatment is causing you pain, inform the therapist immediately. For those of you with sensitive skin, it’s advised that you choose a therapist that uses the diamond-tip method.
Because you have had the surface layers of your skin removed, you haven’t yet built a protective barrier for your new skin. After your treatment, it’s important that you use plenty of sun cream, even if you’re in the shade, as your new skin will burn easily.
